She & Him Announce ‘Volume 3’ and Summer Tour

M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel are releasing Volume 3, their third record of original material together, on May 7th (North America) and May 13th (UK / Europe).

M. Ward and Zooey Deschanel grace the cover of ‘Volume 3’.

This is actually the first time M. Ward has ever (clearly) been on a record cover before. You see his silhouette in A Wasteland Companion, but that’s about it. I’ve always enjoyed what these two do together. Deschanel’s songs are simple. Music in its most basic form, but damn, those melodies are great for our ears. And M. Ward’s craftsmanship (as a producer and guitarist) is always exciting to hear.

Volume 3 includes 11 songs by the actress/songstress and, of course, three covers. It wouldn’t be a She & Him album without them, or cameo appearances by other musicians. NRBQ’s Joey Spampinato, Mike Watt, Tilly and the Wall, Pierre de Reeder from Rilo Kiley, and Tom Hagerman from Devotchka all make appearances on this one.

Track listing for Volume Three:
1. I’’ve Got Your Number, Son
2. Never Wanted Your Love
3. Baby
4. I Could’’ve Been Your Girl
5. Turn to White
6. Somebody Sweet to Talk To
7. Something’’s Haunting You
8. Together
9. Hold Me, Thrill Me, Kiss Me
10. Snow Queen
11. Sunday Girl
12. London
13. Shadow of Love
14. Reprise (I Could’’ve Been Your Girl)

She & Him’s last two albums have, for the most part, been pretty upbeat, with a couple of sombre tunes here and there. But looking at this tracklist (and knowing Deschanel and Death Cab front-man Ben Gibbard got a divorce last year), I can’t help but wonder if things took a turn for the dark in this one.

Guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Check out She & Him’s official website for more info on tour dates. (Note: Emmy Lou Harris and Camera Obscura are tagging along for some of these!)
