The word is out! Here are your Oscar nominees for 2013.
What I want to talk about specifically, though, are those nominated for ‘Original Song’. Last year, only two tunes made the cut: “Man or Muppet” from The Muppets and ‘Real in Rio’ from Rio.
The pickings were still somewhat slim this year, but at least the numbers are up. Nominees in 2013 are:
“Before My Time” from Chasing Ice
The song is written and produced by J. Ralph and performed by Scarlett Johansson and Joshua Bell. It’s a somber, but touching ode that serves as the perfect backdrop for a film which documents decaying ice and icebergs on the surface of the Jokulsarlon in southeast Iceland.
“Everybody Needs a Best Friend” from Ted
Jazzy little number with lyrics by Seth MacFarlane and music by Walter Murphy. It’s hard to say ‘no’ to Norah Jones, but I think other songs in the category are stronger than this one.
“Pi’s Lullaby” from The Life of Pi
This song is beautiful, light and dream-evoking. I haven’t watched the movie yet, but I’m hoping to this weekend.
“Skyfall” from Skyfall
I love this song. It’s cathartic, very Bond anthem-esque. Adele knows how to deliver, using that powerful voice of hers to place an emphasis where it counts the most. Some songs just leave an impression on your ear drums. I don’t think I’ve enjoyed a Bond song this much since Garbage’s “The World is Not Enough”.
“Suddenly” from Les Misérables
Another movie I have yet to watch. Admittedly, I’m not a big fan of musicals and I think it’s a tough choice to make, comparing this kind of song to others in the category. Hugh Jackman’s rendition might be something else on screen, but when I listen to the song I don’t see it topping all the other nominees.
Check them out and see what you guys think. I’ll do another post soon about the Original Score nominees. I was kind of hoping to see Dan Romer and Benh Zeitlin nominated for the Beasts of the Southern Wild soundtrack… but I’ll get to that later.
